The Rapids are back home today as they play host to NYCFC. This game is a welcomed break from the road as the Rapids still have more road games in front of them this month. Coming off a last second win in Houston the burgundy boys look to pick up momentum and hold off one of the Eastern Conference’s top contenders.
NYCFC are 9 points away from the Supporters Shield, but are 5-6-2 on the road and if the Rapids can play spoiler once again that will surely hinder City’s chances at reaching the top of the MLS standings. The Rapids and NYCFC have played just twice; with a win and a tie the bad guys took points from both games.
This clash of teams could offer up some exciting soccer as NYCFC look to David Villa to provide an offensive spark. Whereas the Rapids will look to continue building on last week’s success, will Dom Badji get closer to his ten goal mark? Badji leads the team in goals and assists right now, while his buddy Marlon Hairston has featured in all 27 MLS games this season. The new Iron Man is also quite able of providing a much needed spark. So is new man Stefan Aigner, who in his second trip off the bench earned his first assist last week. We should expect Aigner to come off the bench for a few more weeks as he is nearing full fitness.
NYCFC comes to Commerce City off a loss at home to Portland, while missing key components to the lineup then; City looks to field their best 11 against our… best hope. We should expect to see a fairly similar set up as what we saw against Houston. I’m not sure on where Kevin Doyle is with concussion protocol, he was out at training this week, but it’s hard to say if he has been cleared to play today.
So maybe playoffs are about as promising as taking home that person who you’ve been looking at across the room all night. So let’s forget about how the evening may end and enjoy the build up until then.
