Pre-Game: CCL Game 2 Rapids v Toronto FC

by Brendan Wyatt

The Rapids are in Toronto to play game two of the CONCACAF Champions League with the odds stacked against them.  Having lost 0-2 at home last week, the Rapids would need an onslaught of goals and a clean sheet to ensure passage on to the next round.  In all seriousness the Rapids would need to score more than two goals and have a two goal lead by the end of 90 minutes.

Not to say that is an impossible feat; anything in soccer can happen but we can also remind ourselves that they are still coming together.  Coach Hudson has said a few times (paraphrasing here) that while we want to win, it is still preseason and there are a lot of new elements to this club “so while we are in a good place right now, we still have some work to do”.

In fairness that last comment was in his answer to where the team is with their fitness.  Something that the few thousand of us who braved the snow or stream to watch the burgundy boys play a tale of two halves last week questioned.  Was fitness an issue in the second half and why were no subs used?  We found out after the game that Coach Hudson wanted these guys to get a real 90 in, and we can expect the same Tuesday night.

Coach also mentioned that one maybe two players who came in late will get a run in against Toronto.  While the Rapids do have ten new players or so, only two have come in late and we haven’t seen play; Danny Wilson and Joe Mason.

Even though Toronto has a two goal lead and will now be hosting it’s unlikely that the Reds will take it easy.  Victor Vazquez was quoted saying “BMO is going to be good for us, with our crowd and the good result we had on the road.”

Game 1 was the Rapids first real game as this new team and now we will get to see how they will react on the road, with a big crowd.

The only way to catch the game is on Univisiondeportes.com at 6pm.

Predicted starting XI: Howard, Ford, Wilson, Smith, Wynne, Hairston, Martinez, Price, Blomberg, Mason, Badji.
