Game Preview: Rapids v Earthquakes

by Brendan Wyatt

The Colorado Rapids play host to the San Jose Earthquakes tonight in a cellar battle that could see one team ending that game on a winning streak.  Both teams have spent most, if not all season, at the bottom of the table but both teams won against better teams last week.

The Rapids are 20-29-15 overall against the Quakes, 12-13-8 at home, leaving the Rapids one win away from .500.  Last year the teams split the results with both teams winning at home. That was the game with the Gashi brace; if only we had that guy now, but he is still listed as questionable with a nagging Achilles injury.  Also listed out or questionable are Giles Barnes and Axel Sjoberg.

Rapids fans have a right to be disappointed in the season thus far, but to put things in perspective San Jose has it worse.  The Quakes sit dead last with just 16 points and 1 win at home (1-5-4).  San Jose has managed to win twice on the road (2-7-3) with two of the three total wins were against FC Dallas.  As if last place was tough enough, try watching a team who up till last week had not won a game since May 12th.

San Jose forward, Vako Qazaishvili, is a threat with 6 goals and 4 helpers so far this season bagging a brace in Dallas last week.  Chris Wondolowski has punished the Rapids in the past and until he is retired he remains a threat.

Kellyn Acosta has shown to be a bit of a spark in what may nearly been an extinguished season, so the games have become more fun to watch.

The Rapids just signed the youngest homegrown in Rapids history, Cole Bassett, 17.  Every homegrown the Rapids have put on the pitch has shown to impress; the trick is when will Bassett make his debut – doubtful it’s today but I do think he is Michael Azira’s replacement on the roster.

Desperation seeps with the players perspiration at this point, both teams are playing for pride and their fans.
