Game Preview: Rapids v Sounders

by Brendan Wyatt

The Colorado Rapids travel west to take on the Seattle Sounders today, an early start for a west coast game with a 2pm MST kickoff. The Rapids have managed to squeeze out 2 wins at CenturyLink field with a 2-9-1 record on Seattle’s turf.

The Sounders have had a rough start to the season losing Jordan Morris to a torn ACL, Clint Dempsey retired mid-season and there are about a half a dozen other guys who have suffered some big injuries.  That hasn’t stopped the Sounders though, who have been slowly climbing up in the standings since we saw them beat our Rapids on July 4th 2-1.

As for the Rapids, who seem to still think there is some sort of tactical advantage out of holding back on injury news will leave you guessing as to whether Kortne Ford and Edgar Castillo are healthy enough to play today; same goes for who the forwards will be.  We do know that Axel Sjoberg is still out and Yannick Boli who is listed as questionable is unlikely to start.

Shkelzen Gashi may have earned his starting spot back after that IQ wonder-goal last week against the Crew, but the real question here is who will be the striker up top with him?  Is Sam Nicholson ready, how is Jack McBean’s foot, or will rookie Nikki Jackson get a chance to build on his goal tally?

A win is not out of the realm of possibility today, as anything can happen. To do so the Rapids will need to not only score, but grind out 90+ minutes of their A game to get past Seattle and PRO.  Speaking of PRO, Deklan Wynne’s red card from last week has been rescinded, so he is available to play in case Edgar Castillo or Kortne Ford are not healthy enough.

Tactically the idea here is to get a point.  We’ve learned that the Rapids thought that clean sheets would help them get points, but as we’ve all found out that didn’t quite work out as planned.  So today, the counter attack will be relied upon as the Rapids will look to hold off a Seattle attack that has been touch and go in the past.   The Rapids want to rely on possession and can maintain the edge there, the trick is finishing in the final third.
