It’s RSL week, it will happen twice this year. No matter how good or bad the Rapids and Real Salt Lake are in the standings, a win matters more to the fans than almost anything. A week when all the talk and focus is on how to beat that stinking team on the other side of the divide.
Good thing is that today the Rapids play host to RSL where they have a 10-6-5 record at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. Although the Rapids have not beaten RSL since 10-15-17 and the Rapids last beat them in May, on the 7th 2016; that was a good year.
Since the Rocky Mountain Cup will be decided by two games this year, home field advantage will be much more than a cliché. The Rapids may have the edge at DSGP but have yet to find a way to win at Rio Tinto, so three points today is an absolute must.
It was the end of the transfer window for MLS on Tuesday and the Rapids did add a few players, all while sending one out. It is hard to say how good of a day it was for the Rapids just yet, but it looks promising. Overall the Rapids lost Benny Feilhaber, 2020 international slot, #1 waiver wire spot and about 775k-875K in TAM, but not payable until 2020. In return they picked up Jonathan Lewis, Lalas Abubakar (on loan), Abdul Rwatubyaye, #5 wire spot, 2nd round pick in 2020 and about 300k in MLS money. At this point everything the Rapids picked up is an improvement and will help the team moving forward.
As for Real Salt Lake, they are 3-6-1 this season and haven’t really changed much with the roster. RSL has had some bad luck with the injury bug as there are five or six guys out for tonight’s game. A few different sources have different opinions on whether or not Kyle Beckerman will be in or out tonight due to his hamstring.
While the season may almost be a wash, the Rocky Mountain Cup and the US Open Cup are not and there are areas of hope for the burgundy faithful and a win tonight might be enough to turn things around.
