Game Preview: Rapids V NYCFC

by Brendan Wyatt

The Colorado Rapids are at home this week as they host New York City FC.  These two teams have met up just four times so far, with NYCFC coming out on top, winning two of those.  The Rapids lost both games in New York playing on that indoor sized pitch they call Yankee stadium, but today the game is at Dicks.  The Rapids have managed to keep NYCFC to a tie both times that they have played host to the Cityzens.

NYCFC come to Dicks with a 9-8-4 record, which has them sitting in 4th in the East. As far as form goes, NYCFC have lost the last two games by just one goal.  A few injuries and a couple suspensions may have them shuffling some things around; be aware of Gary Mackey-Steven the 29-yr. old Scottish midfielder can turn some heads.  He arrived in New York at the start of the transfer window- for free.  The Rapids missed the boat on that one.

Speaking of the Rapids, on the injury front nothing has changed. Kortne Ford and Deklan Wynne are out and until I see or hear otherwise, I’ll be the first to say Wynne is out for the season.  The only other injury to report is Jack Price, who is still out with his nagging injury which we also will hope won’t be season ending.  This is that moment where Gary Mackey-Steven would have been a nice pick up.

Two other notable absences from today’s game will be Kellyn Acosta, who must sit one more game for the double yellow and Diego Rubio, for accumulation of yellows.  It should be noted that only Jack Price would be suspended if he picked up another yellow, whereas Danny Wilson, Lalas Abubakar, Nicolas Mezquida and Kei Kamara are two away from sitting one out.

Both squads have guys who can hurt you in various spots on the pitch.  Both teams will rely on their midfield to build up the attack as well.  Ideally fans would like to see the Rapids go out firing, with wing play down the wings to Lewis and Nicolson who will keep their wingbacks more than occupied.  This game could look very much like the Portland game, but hopefully without the Rapids scoring on themselves.
