Game Preview: Rapids v Quakes

by Brendan Wyatt

The Colorado Rapids head west, to the one region of the country where the Rapids seem to struggle the most.  In this adventure, the Pids will face the Quakes in San Jose.  Unlike most years, the Quakes are not competing with the Rapids for last place in the West.  Instead, San Jose has won the last three in a row which has them well above the playoff line and sitting in the 5th spot in the standings.

The Quakes have four players who have 5 or more goals scored. Which means that for once, that San Jose isn’t just the Chris Wondolowski show and the Rapids will have to make sure that the midfield isn’t like walking through grandma’s garden getting to the goal.  It’s not just goals scored we should worry about either, Christian Espinoza has 9 assists and Magnus Eriksson has 5. That San Jose attack can make plays so there should be a lot of focus on defending.

As for the Rapids, the fans can only hope that the Sebastian Anderson experiment was only to get his call up to the U17’s.  The full result of that move not only cost the Rapids three points against NYCFC, but now the 16-year-old will be out for the next three games.  Two with the Nat’s, then he will have to sit when San Jose comes to town.  In the eyes of many, this is a good thing; Sam Nicholson can make his case for a return to the starting eleven. Now that Jonathan Lewis is back, Diego Rubio could also be called upon to fill that hole on the other side of the pitch.

Although Tim Howard isn’t listed as out, he is out. Howard left the NYCFC game in the first half due to a concern with his right hamstring/calf area and did not train this week. Also out as per usual, Korte Ford and Deklan Wynne.  Kei Kamara is listed as questionable with a back problem.

There is a way for a Rapids win though.  Should Jack Price and Danny Wilson be able to hold the midfield, while feeding Kellyn Acosta and Lewis; it won’t matter who is on the final ball if it’s burgundy tapping it in.  This has the make-up of many of the other San Jose vs Colorado games; gritty, choppy, low scoring and there may even be some influence from the guy with the whistle in his hand.  Just about any game where Baldomero Toledo is involved there is some sort of issue.
