Game Preview: Rapids v Impact

by Brendan Wyatt

The Colorado Rapids play host to the Montreal Impact tonight at Dicks Sporting Good Park. Where the pelts of the prairie dogs are plague ridden for the couriers de bois. The Impact come to Colorado in search of a means to a win streak after losing four in a row before last Saturday where the punched Philly out 4-0.  Often called the Jekyll & Hyde of MLS, the Impact ‘s form is much like an irregular heartbeat and have yet to find consistency. Montreal (10-11-3) are the only team in the league above the playoff line with more losses than wins.

As much as I would like to keep making jokes towards fur traders, beaver trapping and nearly awful beer, the Impact are no joke really. Of their 31 goals for, the leading scorer only has 7. Montreal have a few known names too, Ignacio Piatti is still playmaking, but he is not the team’s leading scorer.  Maximiliano Urruti, (a name that may sound familiar from his days in Portland) may have just one goal but leads the team with 6 assists.  Saphir Taider is the Impact’s leading scorer with 7 goals and right behind him is Orji Okwonkwo with 6.  Overwhelmed yet? That’s 4 guys who are scary at what they do, and before we go let me also add Lassi Lappalainen who bagged a brace in his debut last weekend.

With the number of threats that Montreal has, the Rapids will have to play Montreal’s game.  Ideally “Pablo ball” where the defense tightens up, possession becomes key and before you know it, 90 minutes went by without many goals.  Not with Montreal, a team again who has more goals scored on them (38 goals against), yet seems to find a way to win, plays a different style of soccer.

Whatever schemes, tactics, or input from the front office that has had the Rapids on a losing streak latly needs to stop tonight.  If the burgundy boys want any chance at three points tonight, the team needs to come out like they did against Minnesota, while keeping their form like they did against LAFC.
