Game Preview: Rapids v Galaxy

by Brendan Wyatt

The Colorado Rapids play host to the LA Galaxy tonight in what could be an entertaining game.  The Galaxy are winless in their last three, including a back and forth goal battle that saw Seattle on top with a score of 4-3.  The Rapids have put up two, two goal shutouts against playoff teams since Robin Fraser took the helm showing us some goalscoring with discipline.  A Rapids win tonight will keep the Galaxy in 8th place, fighting for a spot in the playoffs.

Both teams will be missing a few of their key names due to either card related punishment or international duty. For those who are worried if Zlatan will play or not, I’ve seen nothing stating he won’t b playing.  The Galaxy will still be without Sebastian Lletget, Jonathan Dos Santos, Uriel Antuna and Rolf Feltscher due to international duty. Diego Polenta is keeping it Hollywood as he is the only one sitting for caution accumulation.  Which brings us to Diego Rubio and Kei Kamara.  Both were on international duty but are required to sit for this game because of their previous actions.  Kei’s red against Real Salt Lake, and Diego on caution accumulation. Cole Bassett and Sebastian Anderson are still listed out with their national teams.

The likelihood of the Rapids roster looking like the one that took down Seattle on Saturday is good, except for Tim Howard; he ought to be in goal for this one although he is still listed as questionable.  Jonathan Lewis did leave the game against Seattle in the 63rd minute where there may have been a hamstring concern; this could open the door for Dillon Serna. The fitness of this squad is top notch and in better condition than I have seen in pervious years.  The concern of three games in 9 days is real. It’s not a big issue when you consider this teams condition and will that they have some fresh legs come Sunday in Toronto.

The Galaxy will come and press high while looking to feed Zlatan, the guy has 23 goals; that’s an average of a goal a game and nearly half of the teams’ total goal tally. The only other option is to sit back hoping to conserve energy for the second half, which will only allow Colorado to play their game form the start.  LA will be coming to Dicks in a bit of a predicament, either they play their game which will open up attack on both ends of the field and Rapids fans could see a goal-fest. Or, like many other teams will the Galaxy sit back and try to defend what ever attack the Rapids throw at them?

The burgundy boys seem prepared for their opponent and unphased at the fact they must play three games in nine days.  It’s a professional’s dream, getting to see the pitch more than once in a week.
