Game Preview: Rapids v Sporting KC

by Brendan Wyatt

The Colorado Rapids are in Kansas City as they look to hopefully play spoiler to Sporting KC.  This matchup always has a feel of a rivalry, but this game will play a part in whether either team has chance at the playoffs.  Sporting KC has 37 to the Rapids 36 points and with three games left the scenario for both teams are about the same; win out with a little help from the soccer gods.

For the Rapids, snagging three points in Kansas City is not an impossible feat.  Although the Rapids are just 5-20-9 in Kansas City, the Rapids have been able to earn points at Children’s Mercy park in recent history. Sporting KC, who has lost its last two, seems to lose in pairs before finding a way to win.

Both Kei Kamara and Diego Rubio spent time in teal, and it is worth a bet that those two will want to put in a great performance in front of old coaches, family and friends.  Kei calls KC home, maybe if he can score tonight, he can find that form he had earlier in the season.

Tim Howard is listed as questionable with a hamstring issue, it’s very likely he will travel, but not play.  This could be a chance to see if Clint Irwin will be the starter next year.  Dillon Serna had throat surgery, and Kofie Opare is listed out with a groin concern.  That is to add to the long-term guys Deklan Wynne (who was running at training this week) and Kortne Ford, who also came out late but has made progress.

With three games left to play, a new coach and for many it’s a contract year; everyone has something to play for.  This game will have the added intensity of players who previously played there, teams close in the standings, playoffs, contracts, maybe even careers could hang in the balance tonight.
