Game preview: Rapids v FC Dallas

by Brendan Wyatt

It’s the final home game for the Colorado Rapids as they take on FC Dallas in what could be another monumental game as the Rapids still look for that elusive playoff spot.  The Rapids sit six points behind FC Dallas, a win here and a win in LA could see the Rapids pull off the unthinkable.  Just think, the Rapids have more wins than the Timbers, Dallas and San Jose since firing Hudson; it goes to show that losing nine games to start the season can surely come back to bite you.

Tonight the Rapids are set to feature Tim Howard, as it will be his final home game in Colorado.  Howard has been listed as questionable with a bad hamstring for a few weeks now, but if he is any good to go at all the chances are high for the fans to see the GOAT one more time.

The Rapids v Dallas matchup has a lot of history, even in times when the games didn’t seem to mean anything, just ask Dillon Serna.  Overall the Rapids are 23-33-17, 15-9-11 at home and I would think Kellyn Acosta may also want to do to Dallas what Kei Kamara and Diego Rubio have done to their previous team (Sporting KC).

Jack Price will be the key, or role player today.  With Price on the top of his game (11 assists this season) there will be opportunities for the guys in burgundy to put one or two past Jesse Gonzales and the Dallas defense.  It should also be noted that coach Robin Fraser is 4-1 in his first 5 with the club, if anything take that as a sign that this guy can get his message across.

Pundits say Dallas has their fate in their hands, but with the wave that the Rapids have been creating lately one might say the ‘soccer gods’ got this one.  We the fan may have to ride this one out for another week or two.

The season in not over yet, although for Rapids fans this may the last chance to see your team play until 2020.  If you didn’t have plans just yet, maybe you do now and hit up Dicks Sporting Goods park for time with your ‘footy fam’ one more time before the 2019 season shuts it door.  Two months ago many people may have been thinking of how to spend next years season ticket money, tonight that could change for some.

One last note: Chris Penso is the center referee tonight, of all the refs in PRO this one is Jekyll & Hyde, he’s called some good games before, but then again, he’s also had no problem showing bias to the visiting team.  Here’s to hoping he won’t want to take the spotlight from Howard.
